Ann Greenwood: Following Threads - A Retrospective
Dec 2, 2023
Feb 18, 2024
permanent exhibition
'Following Threads' is the first major retrospective for this pioneering artist, who has influenced generations and reshaped the way we see textile art.

"The work of Ann Greenwood is courageous in a world where the spiritual life is out of fashion", writes The Reverend Ken Parker OAM. Indeed, in our world of frenetic pace and overabundance, her stylized abstract wool weavings and embroideries are an appeal to the inner spirit. Greenwood draws on a range of sources, from the mythological to the psychological, by way of the sacred with occasional deviations through landscape, to create luminous and transcendent visions in fibre.

Following Threads is the first major retrospective for this pioneering artist, active since the 1960s—quite often in and around Gippsland—who has influenced generations and reshaped the way we see textile art.

Her practice has explored rich themes related to Jungian psychology and the archetypal stories of humanity which transcend culture and time.

Accompanied by a new book of the same title by exhibition curator Dr Louisa Waters, Following Threads is an in-depth exploration of Greenwood’s life and work in two parts: ‘Ann the Weaver 1965-1998’, and ‘Ann the Embroider 1998-2004’.
